What Have You Been Digging For?

Do you know what “fool’s gold” is? It looks like gold in walls of the mine but is worthless. It’s fooled many people into digging for it. This reminds me that we spend tremendous amounts of energy digging into things we worry about being vitally important to us. However, as we grow older, we find that much of what we spent all this energy on was not really as important we thought. We then realize we have wasted immense amounts of time and energy over things that have ultimately lost their value to us because we matured and changed. These were “fool’s gold” to our flesh. Matthew 6:31 and 6:33 (NKJV) says, “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’… {33} But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

It’s vital to invest time and energy in our young people, instilling in them the values we discovered through wasted years of seeking what we thought was really important. Then they will have the ability to dig into those things that are the true treasure that comes from our accumulated wisdom and understanding. This is treasure that’s timeless truth. It’s of great worth. Perhaps we can provide them with a shortcut to it that we never had. I’m Dr. Bob. What young people might you help them see the value of digging for the Lord’s real treasure? If you can identify some of these people, the next question is: How can you specifically help them see beyond the fool’s gold and gain a love to dig for what’s true treasure?
