The Power of Words – from the Heart to the Mouth
Have you ever noticed the power of words? I have observed that many people not only wear their emotions on their sleeves, but also take things to the next step and hurtfully broadcast their emotions out of mouths. Their words become instruments of destruction, both to the hearer and to the one who speaks them. It is obvious to me that a prayer saying, “Holy Spirit, help me to guard what I say” is worth praying, whenever our hearts are touched by the desire to deliver an emotional response that will not be pleasing to God.
I was reading the Bible this morning and came across Proverbs 14:33. The New King James Version says, “Wisdom rests quietly in the heart of him who has understanding. But what is in the heart of fools is made known.” As I continued to read, I encountered Proverbs 15:2. It says, “The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.” These words reminded me of those times when my words were foolish responses to what I allowed into my heart. Too often, our emotions influence and even infect our hearts. Then, what is in our hearts pours out of our mouths like a poison-filled fog that kills, steals and destroys the spirits of those who are enveloped by the words.
We have to allow the Spirit of God to help us keep our hearts clear. Otherwise, our own emotions can harden our hearts and cause them to generate a poisonous fog of words that fills the air with destruction. Let me end this with Proverbs 25:11. It says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” now, take a few moments and ask the Holy Spirit to help you guard your heart and when necessary, zip your lip. Let only those words that are as precious as “apples of gold” travel from your heart and leave your mouth. Seriously, heed this advice. It just might change the quality and fruitfulness of your day.
